The Review

The Malleus Maleficarum Council works in secret to keep the world safe from magic, but something strange is happening among their enemy, the witches.

Hunter Astley is the most powerful witch hunter they have, and when rumours of a new Shadow Witch reach his ears, he delves into the past to discover how to defeat her. Hunter is about to go on a journey of discovery in which he will endure betrayal, deep loss and soul wrenching pain before he can harness his true powers to save the world.

In this trilogy, K S Marsden has woven together a dark yet gripping world of witchcraft and anti-witchcraft that has the reader questioning who the bad guys really are. The author has a great imagination, taking subplots that are almost cliches and spinning them into something new and fresh.

Hunter, the main character, is almost amoral in his tortured angst – trying to do the right thing, and escaping harm because of his power while those around him suffer. A suite of secondary characters carry the story along, but a warning for readers: like Game of Thrones, don’t get too attached. It wasn’t long before I was laying bets with myself over who was going to survive to the end of each book!

The ending was a nice twist, although I wasn’t fully satisfied by the way the forbidden love sub plot was wrapped up.

The pace improves with each book, as if the author was finding their feet in the earlier ones and grew more confident as they became more familiar with the world they’d created. Overall, ‘Witch-Hunter’ is a fast-paced and action packed story.

I recommend this to readers who like adult-oriented urban fantasy set in a dystopian style of world, such as the ‘Shadow and Bone’ series.

The Reviewer

Reading is my biggest hobby, some would say my passion! Whether I’m sitting on the bus heading to the office, slouched on the couch with a cup of coffee, or tucked up in bed on a rainy day, a book is always within reach. My favourite genre is hard sci-fi, closely followed by fantasy and steam punk. But I’ve fallen in love with books across many genres, from horror to thrillers to cosies to romance. Books are best!
