About The Book
Getting blown up wasn’t the worst thing that had ever happened to eighteen-year-old Danny Cooper.
His mother had died so long ago, he could barely remember her. Now he lives with his alcoholic janitor father in the basement of the 150-year-old New Territorial Military Institute. Growing up at the prestigious, low-profile military academy, Danny had watched as the Territorial discretely provided a college education for the sons and daughters of politicians and royal families across the world, as well as the children of the rich and dysfunctional.
Beginning his freshman year at the Territorial on a “child of an employee” scholarship, Danny has a simple plan: graduate, leave behind his widowed drunk of a dad, and get the hell out of Wyoming.
That was before his home exploded. Before he met the sickly, spooky Tatiana who could See. Before the whispers in the night.
And that was before things got really weird.
The Review
Nothing is ever as easy as you plan and that is fully the case for Danny. A new student at a military school, but he has been living on the grounds with his father for years as he is a janitor there. His plan – get through college and move on/away but that is easier said than done, especially with the weird things that begin to happen around campus. I like Danny as a character. He’s had to deal with some tough situations – loss of his mother, alcoholic father – but he is doing the best he can to get away from it all and that means graduating.
The friendship that Danny has with Tommy is clearly important from the start. They have been around each other for a long time, with Danny even going off campus to Tommy’s home and spending time with the family. There is a love interest in the book that comes from one of the people that the friends were initially dismissive of, but I loved the strength she showed in how she recuperates and stands strong for herself and what she knows.
The ‘relationship’ seemed to come out of nowhere with no real engagement between the two. There’s no deep discussions of their lives or those getting to know you moments that you would expect. I thought there would be more interaction with the father, considering that he is on the same campus as Danny, but he seems to be added as an afterthought in a couple of scenes.
The author really went in on the world building for this, but it did take a minute for me to figure out whether the book is actually paranormal or not, regardless of the cover! The settings are wonderfully described and so I found it easy to imagine where all parts of the story were taking place. You also have the elders of the college working to ensure that the young people on campus don’t find out or look into what is going on in their local area.
Clearly the local people know, especially the natives, but they don’t give out information on it. However, when the time comes, they definitely need the help!
There are suspenseful moments that have you guessing as to what is going on and intrigued as to the supernatural possibilities. It turns out all the training the students have been doing may not quite have prepared them for what is coming but they find a strength collectively they didn’t know they had when the moment arrives for battle.
