Captain Janet Hollander is recalled to duty when XenoCorp loses contact with a remote moonbase—the site of secret experiments with the alien artifact she discovered on her last, disastrous mission.

She and a security team arrive at the moon to find the base deserted—but far from lifeless. The artifact is recreating the planetary environment of the extinct alien race who created it—along with its lifeforms, which trap the team and cripple their ship. Now Hollander must return to command to stop a runaway biological process that could end humanity.
