About The Book

Fourteen years ago, Storm Tera failed to save the world. Born a prophecy child, foretold to save magic, he went into war untrained, unprepared and lost everything. Ever since, he’s been in self-exile, turning his back on magic as it grows and festers inside of him, unused and unwanted.

Then a young witch makes an offer he can’t refuse: to go back in time and undo the mistakes that led to his failure. They have one chance to rewrite the past, to save everyone he lost, and ultimately…to save magic.

Storm is about to play a game of cat and mouse with time and the Fates. Necromancy is in his blood, but if he can’t find a way to prevent the death of Rowan Copry, he can say goodbye to magic, and life as he knows it, forever.

The Review

“You need to return to the coven and fix this.”—The Death of Rowan Copry

In “The Death of Rowan Copry,” protagonist Storm Tera has turned his back on magic and everything associated with it—including the Chosen One Prophecy which he symbolizes. He has a good reason for shunning it though. After all, he’d just gone into a war with little to no real combat and magical training or preparation. The war, it was epic, of course. A pitched battle against good and evil, one that also cost the life of someone very dear to him. Moreover, it was a war that left Evil to reign. With his world in such disarray, what could possibly be left for him (prophecy be damned!)? Nothing, you’d think. Except you’d be wrong. Because Storm is not only a necromancer; he’s a time traveler too, with a friend who is a witch willing to take a chance.

But what’s that well-known time travel and necromancy maxim in fantasies? Well, trite as it may be, it’s true nonetheless: you must not, ever, resurrect someone you love. Or else.

I suppose what makes this mishmash of necromancy and time travel entertaining is immersion into a world that is so magic heavy. While White’s world building is dense, it is innovative as well. Her take on demons may be reminiscent of Deborah Harkness’s treatment but it is still uniquely her own. Perhaps more unique is the time travel narrative. Each time Storm travels, he assumes the memories of a different character, one who is not necessarily of his choice. This allows Storm (and the reader) to relive the experiences of central characters, to experience the motivations of each, to move the plot forward, to build conflict, and to ultimately teach Storm a very important lesson about life, love, and death.

A four-star review about whether second chances are meant to be or are possible at all and its ultimate cost, if it is.
